The other idea is that the electrical impulses stimulate nerves, raising the level of endorphins. The endorphins, the body’s natural pain-killing chemical, then block the perception of pain.

The gate theory is like a train car of pain messages going up to your brain but the conductor throws the switch so the pain message does not get to your brain. That is how a TENS unit works.
