Can TENS Therapy Resolve Pain Without Medication?

Many of us are on a quest for pain relief, with a variety of resources at our disposal. Here’s one that may be new to some people: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. Also called TENS therapy, this treatment was developed in the 1970s. Initially available only in clinical settings, it’s now available for home use. Like many electronic devices, the TENS device has become smaller and cheaper over the years, which is excellent news for those who would like to explore it as an option for treating pain.

Briefly, the device delivers a low-voltage electrical current to provide pain relief. Two theories propose how these currents relieve pain. One notion is that electricity stimulates nerve cells that obstruct the transmission of pain signals, modifying one’s perception of pain. The other idea is that the electrical impulses stimulate nerves, raising the level of endorphins. The endorphins, the body’s natural pain-killing chemical, then block the perception of pain.

Talk to your doctor about whether this therapy might help relieve your pain, then talk to PM Medical Products about what we’ve got to offer. We would love to be your partner in pain-free living. Please bring your questions to us at our storefront in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, also serving Scranton and Allentown. We look forward to assisting you!

What Is TENS Therapy?

The TENS unit has two components: A small battery-powered device and a set of two electrodes on wires. The patient places the electrodes on two parts of the body, and turns the machine on, creating a circuit transmitting an electrical current between the two pads. The electrodes should be placed at or near the nerves where the pain is located or at trigger points. The current will cause muscles to relax or contract. Users can adjust the electrical current for frequency, duration, and intensity.

What Does TENS Therapy Treat?

This technology has been used on a variety of complaints ranging from acute (short-term) to chronic. Conditions treated include tendinitis, bursitis, osteoarthritis, low back pain, chronic pelvic pain, fibromyalgia, and diabetic neuropathy.

TENS Pros and Cons

Studies evaluating the efficacy of this treatment are all over the map, in part because pain varies so widely, and the current delivered by the device can also vary widely based on the many settings and the potential placement of the electrodes. In its favor, TENS can be a non-invasive, chemical-free way to treat pain. On the other hand, some people find the tingling or prickling sensation delivered quite uncomfortable. There are also contra-indications for people with certain conditions such as an electronic implant devices, epilepsy, and more.
