Learn More About CPAP & BiPAP Machines

If you’re one of many people who struggles with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), you know how much of an impact it can have on the quality of your sleep. The good news is that the market is full of products that are designed to solve this exact problem. Two of the most popular options are CPAP and BiPAP machines. Not sure how to choose between the two? We’ve got you covered. Read on to learn more about what a CPAP/BiPAP does. When you’re ready to check out the models, visit PM Medical Products in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Our team looks forward to assisting you.

What's The Difference?

First, you want to understand the difference between these two options. While both of them are designed to treat sleep apnea, they function a bit differently. A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is equipped with a single pressure setting, which stays the same during the night. Some users prefer a model with a ramp feature. When you have this feature, the CPAP machine starts at a lower setting and gradually increases to the prescribed pressure level. Once it reaches the prescribed level, it will stay there for the rest of the night. If you have trouble with the immediate burst of high-level pressure, a CPAP machine with a ramp feature can be beneficial.

What's a BiPAP?

A bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machine comes with two pressure levels rather than one. Typically, one setting is the prescribed level of pressure for inhalation and the other is a lower pressure level for exhalation. When you have two different settings, it will be easier to get more air in and out of your lungs when using your device. You’ll feel better knowing that you won’t have to exhale against a high level of pressure with a BiPAP machine. If you’ve had issues with this in the past, you’d likely benefit from a device with two settings as opposed to one.
